Heavy Duty Dog Crates-A Misunderstood Solution to a Big Problem

]]>

Often, dogs that were not crate trained wind up in a heavy duty dog crate. Some larger or heavier dogs may have simply pushed their way out of weaker dog crates. Heavy duty dog crates are often the choice of professional breeders and handlers and are available in a range of price, door and finish options. These crates can also serve as an excellent place for puppy litters to live and play if weather does not permit outside play.

The Level 2 Heavy Duty Dog Crate

There are two types of heavy duty dog crates. First is the Level 2 dog crate. The Level 2 crate has tubular steel frame. Heavy 20 gauge steel wire completes the crate on all sides, bottom and top. The level 2 heavy duty dog crate is somewhat lower in cost than the strongest of the heavy duty dog crates, the Level 3 crate. The Level 2 crate should handle most situations quite well but you know your animal so the final decision is always up to you. Some suppliers say they are offering a “heavy duty dog cage” however it is simply a wire type dog crate made from heavier gauge wire.

The Level 3 Heavy Duty Dog Crate

The Level 3 crate is made completely of tubular steel including the frame and all sides as well as the top and bottom areas. This crate is made for the strongest, most aggressive, most difficult of dogs or other animals. While manufacturers cannot guarantee the crate will hold what you put in it, it is easy to see why a Level 3 crate works for the strongest of dogs and other animals. These crates will last for many years and will most likely be the last crate your dog will ever need.

Mobility

These are larger dog crates. They can be put inside or outside the home. All heavy duty dog crates should have 4 lockable wheel mobility. They say the only thing you can count on is change so be ready by making sure your product has 4 lockable wheels on it.

Metal Pans

A removable metal pan is a must no matter what size dog crate you purchase. It is more important with heavy duty crates especially if you have a chewer. If you have or have ever had a chewer you know what can happen to anything, dog crates included, should the chewer manage access to items, especially plastic items. Plastic pans can warp and crack in a relatively short time period. Be sure your crate comes with a floor grate as well.

Doors

Good heavy duty dog crates have 2 to 3 doors including accessibility from the top. Some have split doors for easy feeding and access to items inside the crate. One never knows how aggressive any particular animal may be. You will find a split-door very handy especially with hard to handle animals. The small door at the bottom of the front door area is made for safely inserting food and water for the occupants.

Colors

Today, heavy duty dog crates come in a choice of colors including black, pink and blue.

Sizes

You can find the tubular steel style crates available in 36″, 42″ and 48″ sizes both in Level 2 and Level 3 strength designations.

Some people get the idea that a dog crate, regular or heavy duty is akin to “jail.” I assume they feel this way because they have never had an overly aggressive dog, loveable as they might be, a large dog that was not crate trained as a puppy or a lawsuit resulting from a dog bite. Worse yet, they have never had a family dog put down because of a dog bite.

Remember also that dogs are “den” animals and many enjoy their own special place for rest and security. Dogs are like children. Sometimes we have to do things that are for their own good, their safety and perhaps their education to improve their quality of life and quality of life for all who come in contact with them.

Choose a supplier that has a full line of both Level 2 and Level 3 dog crates when shopping for your heavy duty dog crate.

Choosing a Pet? Things to Consider Before Choosing a Pet

First, lets think about why we are thinking about choosing a pet. Is it because the children have been bugging your forever to get a new puppy or kitten? This is something most know but I feel I have to say it again just for the few that have not had the experience. Your children begging you to choose a pet is not, in itself, a good reason for getting one. Children need to be old enough and mature enough to care for the pet puppy as an example.

Edgewater, NJ (PRWEB) June 3, 2009

A key element that has made the internet so popular from all walks of life is the ease of readily available information. The downside of this, however, is that anyone who’s had a tutorial of building a website can put whatever information they deem to be true or accurate, even if it’s not. Jim Murphy is aware of this, which is why the pet enthusiast has well-researched information and his own experiences as the guiding forces behind his new web venture www.YourPetsCount.com.

“I’ve been a pet lover for years,” Murphy explained. “When I look at some pet stores, it’s just stuff, which doesn’t make for the best overall resource. I wanted to create something that was useful and not just a shopping site.”

Murphy started Your Pets Count in March of 2009 and it’s well on its way to becoming one of the internet’s premiere destinations for pet information and products.

The new site has a comprehensive catalog as a wide selection of dog carriers, cat beds and even a self cleaning litter box are included in the web store. Even though the site is still in its infancy, Murphy is already thinking about expanding his product line and its features.

“I’m going to add extra products and keep it up to date,” he said. “I’d also like to add audio inserts with pet tips.”

An advocate for finding homes for abandoned pets, Murphy has also started a new blog, www.ThePetProductGuru.com, which further extends his vision of having as much information as products.

“I want to have information and links available that will help with pet care and emergencies,” he said.

As the site gains traction over the coming months, Murphy’s goal is to steadily provide information and items that will help with the overall comfort of a pet, which, in turn, will help people become better care takers.

“I want to make it unique and provide information and supplies. It’s the kind of website where they don’t have to jump around,” said Murphy. “I want to keep the information fresh and the people informed.”

Question by 311csu: My dog hurts its snout trying hard to escape crate when i am at work. Ideas on how to safely keep dog crated?
My new dog (4 years old medium sized) will break out of the crate by unhooking the metal latch. It is a very smart dog. When it does get out, it will destroy the house. Does anyone know what I can do to keep it in the crate without it hurting itself to get out. Is there a better crate out there that will fit the description i am dealing with?

Question by forallreals: What to buy for a new dog?
Tomorrow I’m adopting a german shepherd/collie mix from my local shelter. I’m going to petco afterwards and buying all the supplies he’ll need. So far, here’s my list:

-dog food
-treats
-toys
-leash
-collar
-crate/crate pad
-dog shampoo
-brush
-bowls
-mat for food/water bowls

Is this all I will need? And also, what toys would you suggest for him if he is only 6 months old and destroys anything that is stuffed?

Best answer:

Answer by croWnie
thank you for adpoting! u are a kind soul i believe instead of getting them at a puppy store.

i think you got the basics covered.

if you want to clip your new doggie nails, u should get a nail clipper too!

and because he is at his growing stage, he might tend to chew, maybe you can get a dog treat big bone to let him chew! it’ll sort of prevent him from chewing up shoes/newspaper and other stuff.

oh, my friend golden retriever, chews on lamb/beef bones for snack. they say it’s good for their fur. i’m not sure whether ur dog can eat, but you may ask the pet shelter later.

When dogs used to live in the wild, they needed a bolt hole for their own protection and peach of mind.

Throughout the years even though many breeds of dogs have been domesticated, they are still den animals and have a strong natural instinct to seek out a small, cosy place to rest for shelter and security. It is a place to make your dog or puppy feel safe, something to protect its back and yet still allows it to look around.

When used properly, crates are the fastest and most humane method of housebreaking dogs. Training a dog to use a crate encourages him to keep its home “clean” and never want to eliminate in its own bed. This can really aid toilet-training. How it works is that a crate acts on a dog’s instinct to keep its den clean and unsoiled.

Keeping your dog in a crate teaches him to “hold it” until he can go in an appropriate place, which helps your puppy develop his bladder control. A crate also promotes happiness in your dog as it feels secure and safe in its own “home”, therefore reducing behavioural problems such as excessive barking and chewing. A crate can also help break bad habits that improperly trained dogs may have developed over the years.

For older dogs, a crate functions as a “bedroom” where they can relax and escape the hustle and bustle of kids, other pets, and everyday family life.

Fabric, Metal or Plastic?

A lightweight fabric soft dog crate is suitable for crate-trained dogs. However they are not suitable for chewers, aggressive or nervous dogs. Plastic kennels are good for dogs that travel a lot and are generally the only method of containment accepted by airlines. Metal wire dog crates are ideal for home use.

They generally provide more room for the dog. They’re also sturdier, so should be able to stand up to your dog’s movement or activity and be able to last as your dog’s permanent “home”.

Whatever the make and design of the crate model, it should allow for proper ventilation and visibility, is durable and stable, has secure slide bolt latches for your dog’s safety, preferably has 2 doors for ease of access, can be folded or set up quickly especially for travel purposes and are well-coated (eg zinc or hard epoxy) for easier cleaning and anti-rust.

What size?

There is no correct size of dog crate for any particular breed. It depends on the size of your dog, the nature of each individual dog, and the amount of space you feel should be sufficient to allow your dog to rest and sleep in it comfortably and safely.

Your dog should be able to stand up straight legs inside the crate, turn around, and lie down in comfort. If the crate is too big, your puppy or dog will have enough room to soil one side and sleep on the other, which defeats the purpose of the crate.

Try to get a crate roomy enough to accommodate your dog’s full-grown size and get a divider panel. This way, you can keep using the same crate and have it “grow” along with your dog without upgrading the size several times.

What type of crate accessories can you get?

Toys and treats – always ensure that you have the appropriate toys and treats in the crate to keep your dog occupied and prevent your teething puppy from chewing on the crate’s metal bars or plastic panels.

Crate bedding – It is also important to purchase crate bedding for warmth and a crate cover is great for reducing the number of outside distractions your dog sees, which can reduce barking and stress in the crate.

Crate pad – a crate pad is more comfortable than the crate’s plastic pan.

A protection bumper – a bumper helps protect your puppy from injuries caused by chewing or leaning against the crate’s metal bars. This is also suitable for highly active dogs which tend to move around a lot in the crate.

Responsible Pet Care for Your Dog in Wesley Chapel, Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Tampa 33613

While your dog is still a puppy, crate training and housebreaking are very important. Crate training means giving your dog a contained space where he can feel secure. You should be able to leave him there at night and when you leave the house. It will keep him safe and also keep the house safe from his scratching and chewing. Housebreaking, on the other hand, means toilet training your puppy to go only in a specific area or outdoors. Make sure to take him there at the appointed hours.

I am amazed by how many people are unaware of the choices available today in their search for the right dog crate for their beloved dog.

When a lot of people think of a dog crate, the first thing that comes to mind is a wire dog crate.  Today there are many alternatives to wire dog crates if you would prefer to have a more stylish crate.  Although a wire dog crate can look aesthetically pleasing in your living area.  Simply adding a dog crate cover can dress up your dog’s wire crate so it will blend in with your decor.  There are colors of dog crate covers to compliment just about every decor.

Soft side dog crates are the most portable.  They’re light weight and easy to transport.  You can easily move from one room to another if you don’t want it to be seen by your guests.  It’s easy to take along when you travel too.  Most soft side dog crates fold away flat and many are stackable.  These are not suitable for dogs with a history of chewing or puppies in the chewing stage.  If you need a crate for your puppy, it’s best to start with a wire dog crate until you get to know his behavior patterns.

Wicker dog crates are another fine alternative to a wire crate.  They are stylish and dogs love them.  Most wicker crates boast an attractive rattan finish that also blends well in any decor. Rubber feet keep these dog crates in place and protect floor surfaces.  Unfortunately, wicker dog crates are not suitable for puppies or dogs with a history of chewing.  They will more than likely try to chew their way out of the wicker crate.

Aluminum designer pet den and dog crate furniture is another excellent alternative. Lovely aluminum dog crates make for unique dog beds that double as functional, attractive tables to fit your home decor. No more dog crate covers, these round puppy beds are sturdy end tables attractively designed to function as small dog beds and dog crates, making for stylish designer dog furniture that doubles as human furniture, too.

Another beautiful alternative to wire crates are wooden dog crates.  Most of the wooden dog crates double as fine furniture.  Most of them look just like end tables.  In fact many are called dog crate end tables.  They’re a stunning addition to your home and pet ownership.  Most of your friends would be surprised when you tell them it’s actually a dog crate!  I wouldn’t recommend wooden dog crates for puppies or dogs with a history of chewing.  They will more than likely try to chew their way out and damage your fine piece of furniture.  Then Rover will really be in the dog house!
