Question by 311csu: My dog hurts its snout trying hard to escape crate when i am at work. Ideas on how to safely keep dog crated?
My new dog (4 years old medium sized) will break out of the crate by unhooking the metal latch. It is a very smart dog. When it does get out, it will destroy the house. Does anyone know what I can do to keep it in the crate without it hurting itself to get out. Is there a better crate out there that will fit the description i am dealing with?

Get a clip to keep it closed and put somthing heavy in front of it to prevent him from pushing the door open.

Get one with two latches. The one I have from Wal Mart has sufficed quite well for my full grown Rotty.

Plastic airline crate, drive two holes, one on top and one on the bottom of the door, right on the plastic and stick a rod through it. The rod stays in front of the door and prevents it from opening. Alternatively, you could get an aluminum crate, they are malinois proof and nothing will escape one..

I would agree that possibly getting another latch to keep it safely fastened may be a good idea, but also I think you need to work on making the crate a more positive place for your furry friend. I would recommend checking out Susan Garrett’s Say Yes! Dog Training tips for crate training. She has crate games that you can play with your dog that will not only make the crate a more positive place for your dog, but they also help to build more focus and motivation, as well as, a more dependable sit, stay, and recall.
Also, in order to get my girl to like the crate, I would stuff a Kong w/ kibble and slather a little peanut butter around the edges, and when I would tell her to get in the crate she would run at a high rate of speed because she knew yummy treats would be coming to her. This also gives the dogs something to do at least for the first few minutes you are gone. I think that the first thing you should do though is definitely try to make the crate a more positive place for your friend.

VARI KENNEL

the hard plastic ones approved for airplanes.

and then cover the front grate with a towel… use an additional clip to keep the door latched.

** buy a REAL BONE ( from petco etc.) and only give it to him when you are leaving for the day and he has to go into the crate.. this will be his special bone.. and he will look forward to kenneling up when you leave.

I know what you are going threw my youngest dog did the same..What we did was we got a combination lock and used that..then ours started taking out the metal bars… Then we put wire mesh around the crate so he could still see out but not get out and after a few weeks he destroyed that to…now we just muzzle him when we are gone..If we don’t he chews up stuff.

Some dogs just can’t be crate trained.. they just like being locked in a small space..

My question to you is why do you crate your dog? If its b/c he/she destroys things while you are gone if so I suggest checking out this site and try doing some of these if all else fails. http://www.wagntrain.com/SeparationAnx.htm

Our dog does the same, So we put the front of the crate towards a wall or a piece of furniture so she can’t get out. Do you put toys in the crate when you leave too? Also we turn on the fan and tv so she gets more relaxed in there, usually she’ll just fall asleep.
